What to look for
- Read Carlo as well as Moretti. Labels include round foil, angular-monogram and clear-plastic formats; a label's shape and full wording matter more than color alone.
- A scratched Carlo Moretti signature can accompany a label. Transcribe any date or edition number separately; a date on one vessel does not establish the full use range of the signature.
- The geometric CM emblem identifies the brand; an attached label also connects the emblem to a particular piece of glass. Compare the complete base and form.

About Carlo Moretti
Carlo and Giovanni Moretti established the Carlo Moretti glassworks on Murano on 30 October 1958. They came from a family active in the Venetian glass industry, but developed a company focused on contemporary design. Early production included clear cut glass and colored vessels decorated with gold. During the early 1960s, two-tone glass with a milky inner layer and colored exterior became an important line.
The firm also produced the matt-surfaced Satinati series for Bloomingdale's in New York. Bowls, vases, tumblers and stemware explored simple geometries and contrasting surfaces. Technical experimentation during the 1970s developed its use of Murano crystal, followed by distinctive cut and milled glass designs in the 1980s. The annually renewed Calici da Collezione stemware series began at Christmas 1990.
Carlo concentrated on artistic direction, while Giovanni contributed commercial leadership. Their glass combined hand skills with repeatable forms; pieces could be signed, dated or numbered by series. The company passed to a Venetian holding company in 2013. Surviving drawings and the substantial family donation to Murano's Glass Museum document the changing designs and production methods.
