Identification guide

Bottle date codes

Bottle date codes must be read in the identified glasshouse’s system; a mould number or patent date is not a universal year code.

Owens-Illinois as a worked system

In a common Owens-Illinois arrangement, the maker logo is central, the plant code is at the left and a year code is at the right. A one-digit year repeats across decades; the logo form and bottle type help select the decade. Some liquor bottles use permit-number arrangements instead.

What to check next

Record the exact logo and all surrounding numbers before reading the right-hand code. A dot is not a universal decade rule. Use the plant history, bottle form and closure with the code when more than one decade fits.
