About Monet

Monet developed from Monocraft Products, founded in 1927 by brothers Michael and Joseff, also known as Jay, Chernow. The company maintained New York offices and a Providence, Rhode Island factory. Its first speciality was metal monograms for handbags. Personalized jewelry followed, including interchangeable-letter Click-Its brooches and Dangles charms, bracelets and necklaces.

Monet Jewelers launched in 1937 as a subsidiary offering a broader fashion-jewelry range. The first full-page advertisement appeared in Vogue that October. Early necklaces and bracelets could carry a Monet Jewelers tag, while some brooches used an accented Monét name. Gold- and silver-coloured metal designs were central to the range, with some enamel and rhinestone pieces. Sterling silver jewelry formed part of the 1940s output. Later collections included chains, bangles, brooches, earrings and matching sets, supported by patented findings and clasp designs.

General Mills acquired Monet in 1968, and the business subsequently passed through other owners. Liz Claiborne bought the Monet Group assets on 26 July 2000 through Monet International. In November 2011, JCPenney acquired the United States and Puerto Rico rights to the Monet trademarks. These ownership changes extended the brand beyond its original Providence manufacturing business.
