Russian 84 silver hallmarks can add a kokoshnik head, town device and maker initials; a bare number on other ware can instead name a pattern.
Multiply 84/96 by 100 to get 87.5%. A Russian assay group can add a town or national device, an assayer’s mark and maker initials. 84 is therefore not an 84% millesimal standard.
A bare 84 can also be an item or pattern number on non-Russian ware. Identify the assay group before applying the zolotnik calculation. Compare any kokoshnik head, town device and maker initials as separate punches.
