About Vendome

Vendome was a higher-priced costume-jewelry line of Coro, the American manufacturer founded by Emanuel Cohn and Carl Rosenberger. The name was in use from 1944 and evoked the fashionable Place Vendôme in Paris. Coro operated a factory in Providence, Rhode Island, with offices in New York. Vendome pieces carried their own name, although they belonged to the larger Coro business.

The line became particularly associated with elaborate glass-bead necklaces and matching earrings. Faceted crystals, simulated pearls, coloured glass cabochons and rhinestones supplied much of its colour and sparkle. It also offered substantial brooches, bracelets and rings, often combining several stone shapes or raising flowers and leaves above an open metal framework. Helen Marion headed the Vendome line with Anthony Angeli as her assistant.

Advertisements from the 1950s and 1960s show Vendome sold through department stores including Saks. Its jewelry used both mixed-case lettering and block-capital signatures, applied to clasps, earring clips, plaques and small tags. Copyright-bearing examples belong to the later signature group. Vendome continued into the 1970s; Coro’s American businesses were bankrupt by 1979.

Coro and Corocraft

These are related brands, but CORO and COROCRAFT lettering identifies their own lines. Vendome pieces use the Vendome name; a Coro Pegasus alone is not a Vendome signature.

Jean Vendome

The French artist jeweler is separate from Coro’s American costume-jewelry line. His signed precious-metal work and French marks should be compared with the Coro name stamps and costume-jewelry construction.
