Thomas Mosser learned glassmaking at the Cambridge Glass Company, where his father Orie worked as plant manager. After Cambridge’s closure, he assembled moulds and used equipment for a business of his own. Production began in 1959 in a converted chicken coop. He subsequently developed Variety Glass, which supplied pharmaceutical glassware, before establishing Mosser Glass in Cambridge, Ohio, in 1971.
The company specialised in pressed glass, combining new designs with historic moulds acquired from Cambridge, Viking and L. G. Wright. Its range grew to include tableware, cake stands, decorative vessels, lamps and animal figures. Different colours, opaque glasses, iridescent finishes and painted decoration gave familiar forms a wide variety of appearances. The small salts and animal novelties became important collecting categories alongside useful household wares.
The Mosser business remained in family hands, with Tom’s children taking an increasing role in its operation. Its marks include several forms of the letter M, with or without an outline, as well as removable company labels. Mark locations vary with the mould: a cat may have a mark above its tail, beneath the base or both. Reissued models can carry a revised device, so an old shape or familiar colour does not by itself establish an early production date.
Also known as: Mosser Glass · Thomas Mosser Glass · Tom Mosser · Mosser Glass, Inc.
Moser has one s and is a different Czech glassworks. Its MOSER wordmark differs from Mosser’s M and Ohio-outline devices.
A circled M can also occur on Maryland bottles. The container form and full manufacturing context distinguish bottle marks from Mosser decorative glass.
Mosser reused historic moulds and made glass from acquired designs. An older-looking form can be made from transferred moulds; read the actual maker mark.
