Read the stamp

BIS hallmark

A BIS hallmark identifies the hallmarking system; 22K916 states the gold grade, while the jeweller’s own logo names a separate business.

The three components

A purity stamp such as 22K916 states the gold grade. The BIS logo identifies the hallmarking system; the HUID identifies the particular hallmarked article. Copy letters and numbers exactly, keeping the jeweller’s own logo or design number separate.

What to check next

Use Verify HUID in the BIS Care app to look up the six-character identifier. Compare the returned purity with the stamp. An older hallmark can have a different component arrangement; a jeweller’s initials are not a substitute for the HUID.
