What to look for
- Read the maker’s name or JH device separately from 925, 18K or 22K. The numbers identify metal content and do not create additional maker-mark designs.
- Compare the full layout and lettering. The unframed monogram, HARDY clasp device, serif JOHN HARDY name, rounded outlined name and hand-engraved signature are distinct forms.
- One signed pair has an engraved 93. It does not establish the use period of every John Hardy stamp, and hand signing was not necessarily confined to the 1970s.
- Bali is the manufacturing origin associated with the brand; the founder’s Canadian nationality does not make these Canadian silver hallmarks.

About John Hardy
John Hardy began a jewellery-making collective in Bali in 1975. The Canadian artist worked with local silversmiths, combining traditional Balinese metalworking with contemporary designs. The business developed a recognisable range of handwoven silver chains, textured surfaces and gold accents. Bracelets, necklaces, earrings and rings became important parts of its production.
Bamboo imitates the segmented plant, Kali uses pebble forms, and Naga develops the Balinese water-dragon motif. Woven chains are made from individually worked links. The Classic Chain range became one of the brand’s principal designs, appearing in different widths and with plain, patterned or gem-set clasps.
Designer Guy Bedarida joined the company in 1999. In 2007 a management group including Bedarida and Damien Dernoncourt bought the business from its founder. Catterton acquired the company in July 2014, with Dernoncourt becoming chairman and Robert Hanson chief executive. The brand retained its Bali craft workshop while selling through an international network of retailers and its own stores. It marked its fiftieth anniversary in 2025 with new collections and an exhibition in Bali.
