Daniel Swarovski founded the crystal-cutting business in Wattens, Austria, in 1895 with Franz Weis and Armand Kosmann. His electrically powered cutting machinery supported the production of faceted stones for jewellery and fashion. The location supplied hydroelectric power and transport links to European markets. For decades the firm supplied components to other designers before launching a finished jewellery collection of its own in 1977.
Early jewellery carries the Edelweiss flower and S.A.L. signatures, while some American pieces use D.S.Co. These names identify the Swarovski business and its jewellery operations; they do not mean that every jewel containing Swarovski stones was made by Swarovski. The swan later became the principal emblem. The brand’s official history places its introduction in 1989, following an earlier edelweiss redesign in 1980.
The Daniel Swarovski Paris luxury collection was introduced in 1989 and used full-name signatures on jewellery and accessories. Savvy was another jewellery line, generally identified by its packaging while the pieces could carry S.A.L. or swan marks. Swarovski continued both finished jewellery and crystal production. In 2021 its corporate emblem changed to a right-facing swan within an octagon.

The crystal supplier’s name describes the stones; it does not identify the maker of an otherwise signed brooch or necklace. Look for Swarovski’s own object signature.
The short D.S.Co. cartouche is an earlier jewellery signature. The later luxury collection uses the full DANIEL SWAROVSKI name.
