About Beswick
James Wright Beswick and his sons John and Gilbert founded the Longton pottery in 1894. It first made tableware and ornaments, later becoming known for figurines. John Ewart Beswick led expansion after his grandfather died in 1921. The business became John Beswick Ltd. in 1936 and was sold to Doulton in 1969. Racehorse and champion-dog figurines began in 1934, farm animals in 1939, Beatrix Potter earthenware figures in the late 1940s and Disney figures in 1952.
The Beswick mark was replaced by Royal Albert in 1989, and the Beatrix Potter range returned in 1998. The factory closed in 2002. The John Beswick brand and design rights were sold in 2004.
