Esther Shimazu, born in Honolulu in 1957, makes hand-built stoneware and porcelain figures, most often bald nude women and sometimes men or animals. She constructs each sculpture part by part, colors the surface with slips and oxides, and uses repeated firing and sanding. She studied ceramics at the University of Hawaii and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
