About Hammersley

The Alsager Pottery works in Longton began in 1862 as Adams, Scrivener & Co., with Titus Hammersley as the additional partner. After Scrivener retired, Harvey Adams and Hammersley continued. Titus died in 1875 and his son George Harris succeeded him. When Adams retired in 1885, the business became Hammersley & Co. George was replaced by his brother Gilbert in 1888. Gilbert's sons Eric and Leslie joined in 1910 and 1919.

The company became Hammersley & Co. (Longton) Ltd. in 1932. Titus Hammersley was a partner in the Longton works established as Adams, Scrivener & Co in 1862. After his death in 1875, George Harris Hammersley continued with Harvey Adams. Adams retired in 1885 and the business became Hammersley & Co. Gilbert Hammersley later led it, and it was renamed Hammersley & Co (Longton) Ltd in 1932.

The Hammersley business developed from Adams, Scrivener & Co. at Sutherland Road, Longton. After Harvey Adams retired in 1885 it continued as Hammersley & Co. Gilbert Hammersley became principal in 1888, and his sons later joined. The company was renamed Hammersley & Co. (Longton) Ltd in 1932.
