James Fryer began decorating bought-in whiteware at the Furlong Works in Tunstall in 1920. The business moved to the Oldcourt Works in 1931 and halted production during the Second World War. It became J. Fryer and Son in 1945, when pottery manufacture began alongside decoration of bought-in blanks. In 1955 the name changed to J. Fryer Ltd and all ware was made on site. James Fryer senior died in 1970.
The business was sold in 1998, with parts acquired by Cortman Ltd and LJB Ceramics.
