Juan, José and Vicente Lladró began making decorative porcelain in their home in Almàssera, near Valencia, in 1953. The brothers had trained in art and worked in local ceramic workshops before setting up independently. Early pieces included plates, vases and figures inspired by European porcelain traditions, with elaborate flowers and applied details among their developing techniques.
During the 1960s the company established its familiar elongated figures and restrained pastel colors. A single-firing process replaced the earlier multiple firings, and the business created a training school for its artists and technicians. Lladró entered the American market in 1965 and opened its present headquarters in Tavernes Blanques in 1969. Figurines remained central, but the range also encompassed animals, religious subjects and complex sculptural groups.
Later production included both detailed High Porcelain compositions and contemporary designs in white or vivid colors. Collaborations with outside designers expanded the range into lighting, home accessories and jewelry. The PHI Industrial Group acquired the company in 2017. The porcelain continues to be made in the Valencia area, with sculptors, mould makers, decorators and flower makers contributing different stages of production.
