About Macintyre & Co
James Macintyre became sole proprietor of the Washington Works, Burslem, after his partnership with William Sadler Kennedy ended in 1854. The business made industrial porcelain, architectural fittings and domestic and art wares. Thomas Hulme and William Woodall became partners around 1865, and the firm became a limited company around 1894. Harry Barnard developed Gesso Faience.
William Moorcroft joined in 1897, became chief designer of the art pottery studio, and left to establish his own factory in 1913. From 1928 the works produced industrial porcelain, principally electrical insulation. Macintyre merged with T. Arrowsmith & Sons in 1966.
