Mark Shapiro makes stoneware inspired by early American pottery, including bottles, flasks and other domestic forms. He alters thrown pieces by paddling and carving, and wood firing contributes to their colours. Some pieces use geometric glaze patterns or abstract calligraphy. He has worked as a studio potter since 1980.
