About Michael Frimkess

Michael Frimkess is known for thin-walled vessels based on Greek, Chinese, Zuñi and Peruvian pottery forms. He combines classical forms with contemporary narrative imagery and social commentary. He studied with Peter Voulkos from 1955 to 1957. His wife Magdalena Suarez Frimkess developed much of the painted imagery and, after 1971 as his multiple sclerosis progressed, did most of the vessel painting.

Their work brings popular culture together with historical ceramic traditions.
