About Robert H. Sperry Robert Sperry
Robert Sperry (1927–1998) studied at the University of Saskatchewan, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Washington, where he taught from 1955 to 1982. His stoneware vessels, platters, sculpture and murals are known for bold black-and-white crackled or crawling surfaces created with heavy slip over dark glaze. An Archie Bray residency brought him into contact with Peter Voulkos and Rudy Autio.
He also made films, including a documentary on Japanese folk potters, before returning to functional pottery and experimental glazes.
