About Shaw and Copestake Ltd - Sylvac

William Shaw and William Copestake founded the business at the Drury Works in Longton in 1894. Richard Hull replaced Copestake as partner after four years. The firm became a limited company in 1936; the source tentatively dates registration of the SylvaC name to 1938. Its wartime production moved to the Falcon Pottery alongside Thomas Lawrance. A new factory opened in Normacot Road in 1957, and the businesses merged in 1962.

Shaw & Copestake entered voluntary liquidation in 1982; the factory was subsequently leased to the Longton Ceramics workers’ cooperative.
