Stephen Polchert (1920–2008) made wheel-thrown porcelain and stoneware, including large forms planned in scaled drawings. He developed hundreds of glazes and later focused on crystalline glazes. He studied at Cranbrook with Maija Grotell from 1949 to 1953 and taught in Nebraska schools and colleges. Influences included Grotell, Bernard Leach and Chinese pottery encountered during World War II.
