United Wilson Porcelain Factory was established in Hong Kong in 1978 by Nelson and Elsa. Its family background lay in the Jin Longsheng and Yong Heng porcelain workshops in Hong Kong and Macau. Elsa learned the craft in Macau, where Nelson worked in export sales before the couple developed their own business.
They first operated J&P Trading Company, building relationships with overseas customers, makers and decorators. An investment in a porcelain workshop in 1974 led to Nelson taking over that business. After the difficult trading conditions of the mid-1970s eased, the enterprise was reorganized under the United Wilson name. Its output included blue-and-white, famille rose, Imari-style and Satsuma-style decoration.
In the 1990s, the founders developed an ormolu range inspired by French antiques, combining decorated porcelain with elaborate gilt-bronze mounts. Vases, jars, bowls and other ornamental forms became part of this range. The business continued into the next generation. The number 1897 in its marks commemorates its family workshop heritage; it is not the manufacture date of a United Wilson object.
Also known as: United Wilson Porcelain Fty. · UWPF · UW 1897 · 永勝彩瓷廠 · United Wilson Porcelain Factory
UW initials are sometimes expanded as Unterweißbach. United Wilson’s crown, bracketed UW and 1897 device belong to the Hong Kong company; compare the full device and any factory label.
Similar historicizing porcelain can bear WL and 1895. Those letters and numbers differ from UW 1897 and are not added to United Wilson’s verified mark count.
