Val Cushing (1931–2013) studied at Alfred University, earning BFA and MFA degrees, and taught ceramics there from 1957 to 1997. His work explored functional and sculptural possibilities in bowls, pitchers, casseroles and lidded jars. His glaze-chemistry research developed influential matte and satin glaze formulas. He was a founding member of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts in 1962.
