About Warren MacKenzie

Warren MacKenzie was an American studio potter whose working pottery stood on a farm outside Stillwater, Minnesota. Born in Kansas City in 1924, he studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and turned from painting to ceramics after military service. He and his first wife, Alix, worked in Saint Paul before training with Bernard Leach in St Ives in the early 1950s.

The couple established their Stillwater pottery in 1953. MacKenzie also taught ceramics at the University of Minnesota, retiring from teaching in 1990 while continuing to make pots. His bowls, plates, pitchers, jars and teapots were intended for daily use. He worked mainly in stoneware, with occasional porcelain, combining wheel throwing with altered rims, practical handles and varied glazed surfaces.

Leach, Shoji Hamada and Japanese and Korean folk pottery shaped his approach. Alix decorated many early pots before her death in 1962. The farm shop later sold work by other potters as well as MacKenzie. His long teaching career helped establish a strong tradition of functional studio pottery in Minnesota. He continued working in Stillwater until his final years and died in 2018.

Look-alikes & how to tell them apart

Alix MacKenzie and collaborative MacKenzie pottery

Shared studio, decoration and paired seals.

Read every seal and compare the decoration and complete object. Alix's decoration on a Warren-thrown pot is collaborative work, not a different Warren chop.

Leach Pottery and other Leach-trained potters

Related functional forms and impressed workshop seals.

Match the individual WM chop as well as any companion pottery seal. A Leach-style form or glaze alone cannot identify the potter.
