The Poppelsdorf faience manufactory was founded in 1755 by Ferdinand von Stockhausen and Johan Jacob Kaisin under the patronage of Clemens August of Cologne. Johann Mathias Rosenkranz and Mauritz Wulf took over in 1805. Wilhelm Wessel acquired part of the business in 1825 and built a new faience and earthenware factory after Rosenkranz died. The Wessel family expanded production; the company became a limited company in 1888.
A major fire in 1926 and financial difficulties led to acquisition by Friedrich Butzke and a focus on sanitary ware. After World War II it became Wessel Keramische Werke AG. Production stopped in 1969.
