About Topazio

Topázio is the Portuguese silver and silverplate brand of Ferreira Marques & Irmão. Manuel José Ferreira Marques founded the business in Porto in 1874, initially making gold jewellery. Large silver pieces entered production in the 1920s. Gabriel and Silvestre Ferreira Marques subsequently led the family firm and introduced the Topázio name in 1934, choosing the gemstone associated with their mother.

The range expanded into decorative silver, tableware and personal ornaments. Large ornamental pieces included the D. João V vase, which became one of the firm’s best-known designs. Silver combined with crystal became an important part of the collection during the 1950s. International selling developed in the following decade, including participation in the Hanover fair. Silverplate was added during the 1970s.

The factory is in Gondomar, near Porto. Its output includes hollowware, cutlery, jewellery and silver-mounted glass. The brand continued into the twenty-first century, introducing contemporary designer collections alongside historic forms. Older decorative styles therefore occur on comparatively recent products, while the commercial name appears on both solid silver and plated metal.
