Read the stamp
MASON describes a jar closure tradition; BALL, KERR and ATLAS name different jar brands or manufacturers.
Read the embossed brand and secondary wording before the small base numbers. MASON’S PATENT NOV 30TH 1858 refers to a closure patent and appears on jars made later. A base mould number usually tracks manufacture rather than stating a year.
Compare the logo lettering, shoulder wording, closure and base together. A metal lid can be replaced, so its brand or date need not match the glass jar. Use the appropriate maker’s logo series to narrow the jar period.
