About David Yurman

David Yurman and Sybil Yurman established their namesake company in New York in 1980. David trained and worked as a sculptor, while Sybil was a painter. Their jewellery grew out of the American craft movement and their shared interest in wearable art. Before the named company, they developed pieces through their earlier Putnam Art Works business.

The pair presented jewellery as coordinated collections rather than simply grouping it by gemstone or metal. Silver combined with gold became an important part of the designs, with gemstone colour and sculptural forms contributing to a recognisable style. The Cable bracelet, created in 1982, used twisted wire and gemstone end caps. Its helix developed into a recurring motif across bracelets, rings, necklaces and other jewellery.

The company expanded its collections and distribution during the following decades. Silver Ice introduced diamond-set silver designs in 1997, and the first Madison Avenue boutique opened in 1999. Their son Evan joined the business in 2003 as design director for men’s jewellery. The house’s signatures include abbreviated names, initials, full-name lettering and a reproduced script signature, often accompanied by metal-content marks.

Another jewellery house using textured silver and gold. Its own designer marks distinguish it from Yurman; a woven or cable-like surface alone is insufficient.

The familiar initials and full name occur on imitations, so matching letters alone do not authenticate a piece.
