Sevres marks
“S c” appears among Sevres marks from France. Sèvres made porcelain, porcelain table services, and decorative vases and plaques.
- Active years
- From 1740
- Products
- porcelain, Porcelain table services, Decorative vases and plaques, Biscuit sculpture, Artist and designer editions
- Marks
- 712
Founded at Vincennes in 1740; moved to Sèvres in 1756; production continues.
What to look for
- Separate the factory emblem, date sign and worker's mark. The interlaced Ls, royal or imperial cyphers and republican marks are different from a painter's isolated letter or symbol.
- On later porcelain, manufacture and decoration can have different dates. Read the underglaze factory mark and overglaze decoration stamp separately; neither should silently replace the other.
- The modern green device was designed by Georges Mathieu in 1972. Other initials or artist signatures can accompany it. A Sèvres place name alone does not identify the national manufactory.

About Sèvres
The Sèvres porcelain manufactory began at the Château de Vincennes in 1740. It initially made soft-paste porcelain and developed under royal patronage, with Madame de Pompadour among its important supporters. The works moved to Sèvres in 1756, and Louis XV took full control in 1759. Table services, ornamental vases, figures, flowers and porcelain plaques served both courtly use and diplomatic display.
Experiments with hard-paste porcelain followed the discovery of suitable French kaolin in the late 1760s. The factory continued through the Revolution and the changes between royal, imperial and republican government. Its official marks changed with these political identities, while painters, gilders, modellers and other workers added their own signs.
Alexandre Brongniart administered the manufactory from 1800 to 1847, expanding its technical and artistic activity. He established the ceramic museum in 1824. Manufacture and museum moved to purpose-built premises beside Saint-Cloud park in 1876. During the twentieth century, collaborations with artists and designers extended its forms and decoration. Sèvres continues to produce porcelain, preserving workshop skills while developing contemporary commissions and editions.
Also known as: Sevres · Sèvres Manufactory · Vincennes-Sèvres · Manufacture royale de Sèvres · Manufacture impériale de Sèvres · Manufacture nationale de Sèvres
Look-alikes & how to tell them apart
Edmé Samson & Cie. →
Produced Sèvres-style porcelain and related imitation devices.
Check for the Samson variant rather than assuming that opposed looping strokes are royal Ls. Compare body, shape, painting and gilding as well as the mark.
Later Sèvres-style copies and redecorated porcelain
Copies can imitate both factory and decorator marks.
Check the vessel’s form and decoration against the Sèvres model. The Walters service copies a Buteux mark but has a handle unlike the relevant factory shapes.
Private workshops in the town of Sèvres
Legitimately used the town name.
Look for the national manufactory’s complete mark and compatible form and decoration; the word Sèvres alone is insufficient.
