Reading the Glasgow group

Date letters changed in July. Between 1784 and 1819 Glasgow goldsmiths sent work to Edinburgh for assay, so a Glasgow maker can appear beside Edinburgh marks. Glasgow’s official assay-office date-letter sequence resumed in 1819; the office closed on 31 March 1964.

What to check next

Compare the letter’s case, exact typeface and shield, not just its alphabetic name. A date letter records the assay year. Use the sponsor’s working dates and the other punches to distinguish repeated letters in older cycles.
