What does 18K HGE mean on jewelry

18K HGE denotes an electroplated layer of 18-karat gold alloy over another metal. HGE means heavy gold electroplate.

18K describes the coating

18K is 75% gold within the plated alloy, not 75% of the entire piece. HGE means heavy gold electroplate. Look for the full suffix inside rings and on the backs of pendants; wear can leave the karat number clearer than the coating letters.

What to check next

Compare GF and RGP, which describe mechanically applied layers, with GP and HGE, which describe plating. Look at the entire coating stamp before interpreting a karat number. At worn edges the base metal may be visible; a maker signature beside the construction mark identifies the company.
