Read the stamp

What does GF mean on jewelry

With a GF stamp, at worn edges the base metal may be visible; a maker signature beside the construction mark identifies the company.

Reading 14K GF and 1/20

14K GF names the gold grade of the bonded layer. A fraction such as 1/20 gives that layer’s share of the metal weight. Read the back of a locket and the tabs on either end of a chain; a clasp can be marked separately.

What to check next

Compare GF and RGP, which describe mechanically applied layers, with GP and HGE, which describe plating. Look at the entire coating stamp before interpreting a karat number. At worn edges the base metal may be visible; a maker signature beside the construction mark identifies the company.
