Read the stamp

Antique doll marks

Doll marks may identify the head maker, body maker, model or size; inspect the back of the head and the body separately.

Head mould and body stamps

Bisque heads often carry impressed names, initials or model numbers at the neck. A composition, cloth or plastic body can carry a different maker or patent stamp. A stitched clothing label may identify only the garment.

What to check next

Record the head mark, body construction, joints and dimensions. A moulded copyright date belongs to the design, while a retailer or owner inscription is a separate clue. Match head and body information before naming the complete doll.
