Continental silver hallmarks
In continental silver hallmarks, French silver may carry Minerva, while Italian registration punches use a star, number and province letters.
Separate country and fineness
Germany can combine a crescent and crown with a numeric fineness. French silver may carry Minerva, while Italian registration punches use a star, number and province letters. The country device narrows a search more than an 800 number alone.
What to check next
Start with the most distinctive national device, then read the maker initials and fineness. A British date-letter chart does not decode a French maker lozenge or an Italian registration number.
