German silver hallmarks

German silver hallmarks differ from ALPACA and NEUSILBER wording; a plated-ware maker can use a crown outside the national control group.

Distinctive marks and standards

800 means 80% silver, 835 means 83.5% and 925 means 92.5%. The crescent-and-crown group distinguishes the national system from a crown used by a plated-ware manufacturer.

What to check next

ALPACA, NEUSILBER and nickel silver describe base alloys rather than 800 or sterling silver. Keep the company logo with the fineness number, especially on flatware where a small stamp can be crowded.
