Portuguese silver hallmarks

Portuguese silver uses assay devices, including historic boar and later bird forms, with a maker’s responsibility mark.

Distinctive marks and standards

A small grade numeral or numeric fineness identifies the silver standard within its particular mark series. Do not identify the maker from the assay animal: a separate initials punch serves that role.

What to check next

Compare the direction and outline of the device and preserve any small numeral. A bare 800 can occur in several countries; the Portuguese assay form is what narrows the national system.
