Pewter marks

Among pewter marks, an owner’s engraved initials need not be the maker’s. Smaller crowned roses or other punches may describe quality.

Touchmark and secondary punches

A touchmark identifies the pewterer and can contain initials with a pictorial device. Smaller crowned roses or other punches may describe quality. Capacity vessels such as tankards can carry later official verification marks.

What to check next

Record the marks on the base, rim and handle separately. An owner’s engraved initials need not be the maker’s. Compare the complete touchmark and object form rather than reading a crown as a silver hallmark.
