Egyptian 18K gold hallmarks

Egyptian 18K gold contains 75% gold, equivalent to 750 fineness. Egyptian hallmark groups use a gold device and a fineness designation, which may use Arabic numerals.

The Egyptian group

Look for ١٨, the Arabic numerals for 18, beside the gold device commonly described as a seagull. Keep the assay and date punches in the photograph: the bird identifies the metal system, while 18 or 750 states its purity.

What to check next

A European 750 punch also denotes 18K gold but does not by itself identify Egypt. On an imported piece, record both groups if Egyptian and foreign punches appear together. 18K HGE describes an electroplated gold layer.
