Spode date marks
Spode date marks belong to the Copeland period; impressed month-and-year codes began around 1867, apart from painted pattern numbers.
Month letter and year
From about 1867, W. T. Copeland & Sons used impressed month-and-year arrangements. Keep the letter vertically associated with the year digits. A separate painted pattern number can contain more digits and serves a different purpose.
Recognising the components
| Mark | Role |
|---|---|
| O above 90 | October 1890 example |
| Painted pattern number | Decoration identity |
| SPODE or COPELAND word mark | Maker and mark-period clue |
What to check next
Preserve SPODE, COPELAND and all country wording in the main stamp. The date code system belongs to the correct company period, and a single large pattern number should not be split into month and year.
