Identification guide

Pottery registration numbers

Pottery registration numbers follow sequential Rd or Rd No. forms; the earlier diamond device encodes details by position around a lozenge.

Diamond marks and numeric registrations

The earlier diamond registration device encodes information in positions around a lozenge. Later Rd or Rd No. numbers are sequential registrations. These differ from a factory’s mould number, pattern number and impressed production date.

What to check next

Record the whole device and orient it correctly. On a plate, a pattern number may be painted beside the backstamp while Rd No. is printed within it. Use a production date code or maker-mark period to narrow when the actual piece was made.
