Ster jewelry mark

A STER jewelry mark names the silver standard; the designer’s signature names the maker, while EPNS describes a base-metal construction.

Reading the metal designation

STERLING, STER, STG, .925 and 925 are forms of the same silver-standard description. Look on ring interiors, bracelet backs and clasp tabs. A designer signature or sponsor punch is separate from the material wording.

What to check next

EPNS and ALPACA describe different base-metal constructions from sterling. A silver standard can still appear on a gilded silver object. Check the mark on the main piece as well as detachable fittings, then use the separate signature to look up its maker.
