Crock markings

Crock markings can identify a pottery or merchant, state a capacity or form part of the decoration; a large number commonly refers to capacity.

Capacity and maker stamp

Separate a prominent capacity numeral from an impressed company name or place stamp near the shoulder. A cobalt-painted motif is decoration and can occur on crocks from different workshops. A merchant’s name can identify who sold the vessel.

What to check next

Record the capacity number, rim profile, handle form and complete impressed lettering. Compare those features with the named pottery. A blue flower alone is less specific than a readable maker-and-town stamp.
